I make mistakes. I think making mistakes is unavoidable and although I try my hardest not to make them, I think it is far more important not to make the same mistake twice. Thus I think repeating mistakes is avoidable and this is what learning by experience is all about.

What's more, when a mistake has cost me money (as mistakes inevitably do in the sharemarket) then it is usually a lesson that becomes engraved in my memory.

That is why the global correction we are in is such a valuable experience for everyone, given that it has cost so many investors such a lot of money. That adds up to a lot of lessons learnt and, I hope, a lot of mistakes that will not be repeated.

Hence the paradox: losing money will make you a better investor. Of course, if we could learn from other people's mistakes then the market's lessons would be a lot less painful (read costly) and so I would like to share with you some of the mistakes I have made in the past, in the hope that you can avoid repeating them.
