    Hi All,

I'm having my SMSF set up with a corporate trustee and have just received the paperwork to sign.

My wife and I both live by names which are not our first names, I use a shortened version of my second name. My wife uses a name similar to her second name.

The paper work provided to our financial adviser included:

firstname secondname (name used) surname for each of us.

The corporate trustee was set up with firstname secondname surname for each of us.

The SMSF was set up with firstname (name used) surname for both of us, ie our second names were omitted.

I don't think I'm being overly cautious by insisting that the SMSF paperwork be reissued with firstname secondname surname to match the trustee.

    What's the view out there?

    Cheers,

    Clint.

You should be using your legal names. May create all sorts of issues down the track with opening bank accounts etc.

Your lawyer should have done an ID check when setting these up.

    Hi Clint,
I agree with Terry, legal paperwork shoud all be in your legal name, rather than an alias

Terry and Kelly are spot on. All needs to be in legal names. You could call yourself Homer Simpson and everyone knows you as that, but the paperwork for the SMSF needs to be in your real, legal names.

    New docs received!

Thanks guys, I thought I might have been being too pedantic.

Good to know I was on the right track.

New docs arrived today and will be returned tomorrow.

    Cheers,

    Clint.
